Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Training
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ is one of the most complete simulation platforms for fluid, thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic applications. This course makes you self-sufficient across the whole workflow: from importing the geometry to exploiting the results and running parametric studies.
- Duration 2 to 3 days
- Level Beginner to intermediate
- Format On site (your premises) or online
- Price from 1100 € excl. VAT / day
- Lead time 14 days after the training agreement is signed
Learning objectives
- Get to grips with the STAR-CCM+ interface: navigation, simulation tree, modelling tools.
- Import or create complex geometries and prepare them for calculation.
- Build a suitable mesh (surface, volume, local refinements, prism layers) and judge its quality.
- Define materials, fluids and solids, and set up the physics models: flow regimes, turbulence, heat transfer, multiphase.
- Apply boundary conditions correctly: inlets and outlets, walls, symmetries, heat sources.
- Set up, run and monitor single-physics then multi-physics simulations (fluid only, fluid with heat transfer, fluid–structure interaction).
- Analyse results with the post-processing tools: sections, plots, iso-surfaces, vectors, streamlines.
- Set up parametric analyses and design exploration studies (DOE, optimisation).
Syllabus
Day 1 — Getting started and preparing the model
- Introduction to STAR-CCM+ and its workflow; organising a simulation project.
- Importing CAD geometry, repairing surfaces, defining the fluid domain.
- Meshing strategies: surface, polyhedral and trimmed meshes, boundary layers; quality control.
Day 2 — Physics, solving and post-processing
- Choosing physics models: steady or transient, incompressible or compressible, turbulence models, heat transfer.
- Boundary and initial conditions; convergence criteria and stability best practices.
- Exploiting results: scenes, reports, monitors, data export.
Day 3 (optional) — Advanced cases and industrial applications
- Multiphase flows, mesh motion, thermal coupling.
- Parametric studies and Design Manager; automation with Java macros.
- Work on a case brought by the participants.
Audience and prerequisites
Engineers, design-office technicians, researchers and project managers who run or supervise CFD simulations. Prerequisites: basic fluid mechanics (flow rate, pressure, pressure losses). No prior experience of STAR-CCM+ is required.
Teaching methods and assessment
Short presentations alternating with guided exercises on industrial cases (pipe, heat exchanger, ventilation, external aerodynamics), course materials and corrected exercise files, end-of-course assessment reviewed by Numersalis, certificate of completion. Participants work on their company's licences; we can also provide a training environment on request.
Why train with Numersalis?
Our instructors use STAR-CCM+ daily in the CFD studies we deliver to industry: they pass on the methods that save time on real projects, not just the menus.
Funding
Numersalis is Qualiopi certified: for companies based in France, our courses are eligible for funding through your OPCO training fund. We help you with the paperwork.
Accessibility
Our courses are open to people with disabilities: contact us so we can plan the adjustments you need.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, participants work on their company's workstations and licences, so that they find exactly their own environment after the course. If you are still evaluating the software, let us know: we can arrange a temporary training environment.
Heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) is part of the standard syllabus. Multiphase flows (VOF, Eulerian, Lagrangian) are covered on day 3 or in a tailored version of the programme.
Yes, and we recommend it: send us a representative case before the session and we build the day 2 or day 3 exercises around your model.
The CFD concepts are the same; the interfaces, meshing strategies and some models differ. Choose the course for the software your team will actually use. If you are undecided, we are happy to discuss it beforehand.
